Australia’s Best Ham

The best ham in Australia has been judged this month as coming from the Barkly Smokehouse in Preston, Victoria. They also won the top prize for the best boneless ham.The best traditional Australian bone-in leg ham also comes from Victoria – Cutfresh Butchers in Dandenong.

The judges used specific criteria related to taste, texture, appearance and aroma.

The Chief Executive Officer of Australian Pork, Andrew Spencer, said at the awards that more than $A10 million of frozen pork is imported in Australia every week from overseas.
The awards were run by Australian Pork to highlight the PorkMark label, which clearly shows customers which hams are 100% Australian grown and manufactured. Mr Spencer said that the Pink Mark is a “no if no buts guarantee of Australian origin”.

Butchers and small goods must become licensed to Australian Pork to use and display the hot pink Pink Mark. So far more than 178 businesses are licensed.
